Car aerodynamics

KFZ Aerodynamik
In this project, the aim was to determine the aerodynamic drag and CW value of an innovative vehicle design. The shape of the underbody in the form of a wedge and the free-standing rear wheels were innovative.

The flow calculations were based on a design draft, i.e. a non-closed, geometric shape. The surface contour was determined using a wrapping algorithm and then triangulated.

The figure shows the pressure distribution on the surface of the car, superimposed with the flow velocities in the center plane of the vehicle. In addition, the turbulence – caused by the rotating wheels – is shown with the help of an isosurface.

CFD calculations of this kind allow design models to be used to localize and evaluate areas that lead to turbulence and thus to higher fuel consumption.
