In large UV disinfection plants, several 100 m³ of water are disinfected per hour. The glass tubes around which the water flows and which form the casing of the UV lamps must be able to withstand the stresses caused by the flow forces.
In this project, the safety against failure of the glass tubes was to be determined for a newly planned plant at a given water mass flow. This is a problem with fluid-structure coupling.
In the first phase, the pressure forces on the individual tubes were determined in a flow simulation (CFD).
In the subsequent FEM analysis, the stresses in the glass tubes were calculated using the results of the CFD simulation.
The images show, among other things, the streamlines in the disinfection system, the equivalent stress in a tube, and the velocity vectors around the end of a glass tube.
