Lightweight design
Lightweight design without using the finite element method is almost unimaginable nowadays. Aircraft, cars, rail vehicles and of course ships are by default analyzed and optimized by means of finite element simulations.
Representative selection of topics in lightweight design:
- Simulation of complex structures considering large deformations and instabilities
- Choice and characterization of lightweight materials such as metals, polymers, composites and laminates
- Choice and assessment of connections such as bonded or rivetted joints, welding, screws
- Assessment of structures regarding fatigue and crack growth
